You did not say if it has spark. Of course the spark plug is not visible to check, but a spark testing light such as a timing light that works by inductance against the high tension wire, would light up when the spark plug was firing.
Also you say it has compression. How do you know? Maybe the compression release that holds the valve open, to allow the cranking motor some momentum is not closing the valve again like it should.
